This portfolio showcases the creative talents of Artist Bernard C. McGahan.

I work with wood-burning as a way to calm myself and focus. It takes me back to a much simpler time, back to when I was a kid at my parents cabin in the northwest. Back then I wood-burned childhood drawings on tree rounds chainsawed by my father. It's the pure simplicity of shape and form through the constraints of using just one tool that draws me in.

I start with drawing a simple but balanced sketch. From there I burn the image into wood using a single flat tip wood-burner. Most of the lines are there but as the piece progresses it takes on its own life. Then I lay in wood stain and white lines to pull everything to together while preserving the look of the natural wood. Each piece tells a unique story that can not be completely planned from the beginning.

These current pieces are my attempt to get back to the true and honest feeling of creating art. Letting the pieces flow into what they are, not what they are required or restricted to be.
